Komon Yasunobu Osugi Donabe
大杉康伸YASUNOBU OSUGI
Yasunobu Osugi is a ceramics craftsman from the Tamba region in Hyogo Japan. His workshop is at the end of a narrow slope on the mountain edge that leads into the Valleys of Tamba. His workshop looks like a hut-like building that blends into the surrounding nature, and the interior is illuminated by orange light bulbs.
Osugi was born and raised in Kobe, but he trained in Iga and Bizen style by different ceramic masters from other prefectures. After his training, he moved to a quiet area in Tamba to fulfill his dream of building a slope style kiln by himself. He started making Donabe based on his experience training in Iga.
Osugi uses Tamba clay for his plates and cups and Iga clay for his donabe. The Iga clay has strong fire resistance and can be used on stoves and BBQs at home.
How to properly care and use ceramics:
-Light coloured pottery may stain from oil or dark sauces so wash the pot as soon as possible if this is of concern.
-Wash by hand and never a dishwasher as this may crack the ceramic.
-Store pottery in a dry space to protect it from mold.
-Not recommended to use in a microwave.
-Not to be used in oven.
-If stacking when storing, you can prevent the pottery from chipping by layering a cloth or paper in between.
With a little effort, you can use this handmade vessel for a life time.
